Urethral dilation versus urethrotomy before urethroplasty

A retrospective study compared how urethral dilation and direct visual internal urethrotomy affect time to urethroplasty for anterior urethral strictures. The comparison helps clinicians choose initial treatment based on progression to definitive surgery.

Tissue-engineered sandwich scaffold for urethral reconstruction

Researchers fabricated and characterized a tissue-engineered sandwich scaffold for urethral stricture reconstruction. Tissue-engineered grafts offer a potential alternative to traditional graft materials.

Resection urethroplasty plus TURP for bulbar stricture with BPH

A study of 135 men with bulbar urethral strictures and benign prostatic hyperplasia found resection urethroplasty with end-to-end anastomosis plus transurethral resection and a two-stage strategy both achieved 97–100% success at 12 months versus 63–70% for simpler procedures. Results guide treatment when both conditions coexist.

Antimicrobial protocol reduces infection and recurrence in post-traumatic urethroplasty

A retrospective analysis of 86 men with post-traumatic urethral strictures found repeated bacteriological testing and risk-stratified antimicrobial therapy reduced postoperative infectious complications to 20.9% and stricture recurrence to 15.1%. Preoperative infection control may improve outcomes in traumatic stricture repair.

Buccal mucosa graft recurrence 16–20% over 5–7 years

A single-center cohort of 115 patients showed 20% recurrence at median 7-year follow-up; a systematic review across 14 studies found pooled recurrence of 16.2% over 5–14 years, with longer operation duration and bulbar or combined stricture location as risk factors. Long-term data confirm buccal mucosa grafts remain effective but identify modifiable and anatomic risk factors.

Ukrainian USS-PROM questionnaire validates post-traumatic stricture outcomes

Researchers validated the Ukrainian USS-PROM questionnaire in 32 patients with post-traumatic anterior urethral strictures, finding good reproducibility and symptom scores improved from 18.0 to 4.8 at six months post-urethroplasty with 87.5% technical success. The tool provides a reliable patient-reported outcome measure for war-related urethral injuries.

Preoperative HALP score predicts stricture recurrence after urethroplasty

A retrospective study of 91 male urethroplasty patients found preoperative hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score independently predicted stricture recurrence, with recurrent cases showing significantly lower scores (34.8 vs. 48.9, p=0.003) and 18.7% recurrence over 18-month median follow-up. The HALP score may identify high-risk patients before surgery.

Buccal and vaginal grafts show comparable success in female urethroplasty

A cross-sectional study of 40 women compared dorsal onlay urethroplasty using buccal mucosa grafts (n=22) versus vaginal wall grafts (n=18), finding similar success rates of 90.9% and 88.9% respectively with maximum urinary flow improving from 7.2 to 19.6 mL/s. Both graft types proved safe and effective for female urethral strictures.

Internal urethrotomy during TURP raises stricture recurrence sixfold

A retrospective cohort of 92 patients at Turkish hospitals found that concomitant internal urethrotomy for stricture detected during bipolar TURP raised six-month recurrence from 5.4% to 25.0% (p=0.015). Avoiding urethrotomy during TURP reduces stricture recurrence in iatrogenic cases.
